Field Trip

First graders have been learning about what animals do in winter and how they survive.  One of the ways animals survive winter is by migrating to warmer areas.  On Friday, February 3rd we get to see a place where manatees migrate....Blue Springs!

Get your permission slips and $5 in soon so you can go with us!

This week at school will be learning more about manatees.  If you want a sneak peek, check out Blue Springs new web cam by clicking on the snowflake below!

Pedro and Penelope Penguin

Our Reading Group is learning about penguins.  We have a fun take home project to go along with it!  Pedro and Penelope are our Class Penguins.  We are taking turns having them come home with us.  When they come back, we learn all about the adventures they had at our houses.  So far Pedro and Penelope are having a BLAST.  Pedro has been out to dinner, to a piano lesson and hung out at the transformers fire house!  Penelope went to the beach and rode a scooter (video below). She even got a make over while she was visiting Lana.  (She really looks like a girl penguin now with all of her pink accessories!)  And guess what.....Penelope is at Disney World right now!  What lucky penguins Pedro and Penelope are.

Our centers also all had penguins in them this week.

We followed written directions to make our own penguins.

We read Tacky Goes to Camp on the iPads.

We read nonfiction books and wrote penguin facts on fish.  Then we got to hang them on the bulletin board all by ourSELF!

Was that really only a 3 day week?

We were only in school 3 days this week?  So much happened that it seemed like a full week!

First of all, we had two new friends join our class....that is always very exciting.  Welcome Joshua and Peyton!

We had our 80th day of school.  That means there are only 100 left....yikes!  Zero the Hero left us snowballs and marshmallows.
8 is even because there are none
left over if you make groups of 2!

Miss Gilbert's Reading Group reached the goal of EVERY STUDENT earning a Reading Counts Award.  Our picture will be on the news Monday morning.  The entire school is VERY impressed with us since usually only the big kid classes reach the 100% goal.

3 snowmen, 6 mittens, 9 buttons

     We made our Winter Growing
           Patterns....snowmen!

We pretended we lived in a snow globe and wrote what it would be like (using our 5 senses).  The final products turned out super cute.  Some are even on the first grade bulletin board in the hallway!

Reading homework and behavior pages will start up again next week.  See you Monday!

Welcome Back!

Welcome back.  I hope you had a fun and restful Winter Break and are ready for a fantastic rest of the school year.  I know I am!

Here are a few important announcements:

  • We need crayons and glue sticks!  If you are out running errands, we would really appreciate if you picked up some for us.
  • I will be making shirts for us to wear on an upcoming Field Trip and again on Field Day.  (More information on both events will be coming home soon.)  Please send in a new white t-shirt for your child.  The Faded Glory brand from Wal-Mart works best, but any will do.  I suggest buying a large or extra large for everyone because they DO shrink when tie-dyed even though the tag says it won't!  No tank tops, please.  If you happen to buy a package and do not need the extras, we could use them.
  • There will be no homework or behavior page this week.  We are getting back into routine and will start both on Monday:-).
