Sight Investigation

We used our sense of sight to investigate Oreos.  First we looked at an Oreo with our eye.  Then we used a hand lens (a real scientist tool) to look closer at the Oreos.  Do you know that an Oreo has all kinds of shapes on it?  We do now, thanks to our hand lenses!  Like real scientists, we recored all of our results in our SLOG.

Reading Centers

Miss Gilbert's Reading Group started centers!  Yea!!  Every week we will get to go to 6 different centers. The centers will remain the same each week, but the activities in them will change so we can practice our skills for the week or to review a past skill.  Read about and see pictures from each center below.

Reading Counts Center

We read a book by ourself and then take a comprehension quiz about the story on the computer.  After we reach our goals, we get an award from the Media Center!

You can read and take reading counts quizzes with your student at Family Library Night on Tuesday nights in the Media Center!

Skills Center

We practice first grade reading skills.  This week it was ABC Order and Retelling story events in order.

Independent Reading Center

We read, read, read by ourselves.  The books in the basket usually have a theme.  This week it is all familiar books (books we have read together or class books we have made).

Technology Center

At the Technology Center we play reading, writing, and spelling games on iPads and iPod Touches!  It is our favorite center!  (We could use some smaller headphones, though!)

Independent Work Center

We complete a skills packet.  This week we got to practice our spelling words by rainbow writing them, using each word in a sentence, and do a word search!

Listening Center

We listen to a book on tape or CD.  This helps us learn how to read fluently and with expression.

Sense of Smell Investigation

Since we are real scientists, we practiced using our sense of smell to predict what was in each container.  Like real scientists, our predictions were not always correct!  We still had fun and.............

 We liked some smells!

Not others!

Week 3 Wrap Up

What a great 3 weeks in first grade so far.  Our class is doing awesome with our routines and procedures! This week we conducted our first science investigation (watch our video below), started our unit on families in Social Studies, began Math Groups, and worked hard in Reading Groups.

Keep bringing your binder to and from school everyday and empty your folder out nightly.  If your reading teacher has started sending home your Reading Bag, please keep everything in the bag and bring it to school daily.  (If your Reading Bag has not been sent home yet, it will be in the next week or so.  Some Reading Teachers are finishing up assessments.)

Cold and Flu season has arrived in First Grade.  Our classroom has been going through the tissues and  could use more if you happen to be at the store. (Publix has them on sale this week!)  We are practicing covering our mouths, using tissues, and ALWAYS using hand sanitizer when we sneeze.   Please remember it is school policy to keep your child home if they are running a temperature.  They must be fever free for 24 hours before returning to school.  First Graders like to share everything......but we don't want to share our germs!

Looking forward to a great Week 4!
Miss Gilbert

Our First Science Investigation

We have been using our five senses to learn about science and the scientific process!  Today we used our sense of taste.  We tasted sweet, sour, bitter and salty.  What a yummy way to learn about science!
