Daily 5

Here are a few pictures from Daily 5!  We are up to 12 minutes for Read to Self.  (Ask your first grader how we have been building our stamina.)

We made it to 5 minutes at Read to Someone Monday.  It was our FIRST day for this!  We were so excited and proud!

This explains why we need some more comfy furniture!  If you know/work for/have a business that helps out in our community, feel free to pass along our Donor's Choose project by clicking the link below.  We are half way to getting our project funded!  Any little bit helps!
Or share this with them:  http://www.donorschoose.org/project/firsties-need-furniturethe-comfy-ki/1051047/
Thanks!

Firsties Need Furniture!

Have you heard about Daily 5?  First graders are talking about it, that is for sure.  Ask your first grader about building their stamina and how many minutes they made it to today.
All first grade reading groups are working on Read to Self.  Some are even beginning the second phase, Read to Someone.  We need your help!  We need to be comfy when we read.  Check out our Donor's Choose project by clicking on the picture below.  We are halfway to getting new furniture for our classroom.  Any little bit helps...$1, $5, $20....or more!

Have a great weekend!

Zero the Hero

Friday was our 10th day of school.  Since 10 is such an important number, we had a special delivery!  Zero the Hero sent us a package!  (Ella got to be our special helper since her birthday was just a few days away!)
The box said "To Ms. Gilbert's Monkeys"

There was a balloon tied to the special helper he brought us!

A treat shaped like ZERO's

A letter from the REAL Zero the Hero!

He also brought us a cape!
Can you predict the next time Zero the Hero will visit again?  Leave a comment below with your prediction!

Welcome to First Grade!

Welcome to our class blog!  I will be posting pictures, activities, information and important announcements on here often.  This will be for our homeroom as well as my reading group.  Please share this web address with friends and family.  You can become a follower over on the left side and get email alerts when something new is posted! I LOVE when families leave comments.

We started our day with some Jitter Juice to help our jitters go away!  Most agreed that it was very yummy!

I am looking forward to spending this year with my 18 lovely new friends!  Be sure to become a follower and leave comments!

Here are our First Day of School pictures!

Plants

We have been learning all about plants in Science (and in Reading Group).  We had a lot of fun learning about the parts of a plant and each part's job.  Ask your first grader why a fruit is a suitcase for a seed!  We also learned the things that all plants need to survive.
Last week we did lots of activities with plants and then we PLANTED lima beans and corn.  (I checked on them today and you are going to be very excited on Monday!)  We sorted seeds and graphed our results.  We even opened seeds.  Did you know that you can see the parts of a plant INSIDE a seed?  Thanks to our FUN investigation on Friday, first graders got to see it!  We were great scientists using our observation skills with our hand lenses.  We also watched how a stem does it's job during a celery investigation.

Here are some pictures for you to enjoy.  I will take some more and post soon!

Don't forget to dress for our field trip on Tuesday.  We will be outside all morning!

By the way....Scruffy grew A LOT over the weekend!!!

We Have a New Classmate........

Meet Scruffy the Caterpillar!
Scruffy will be part of our class for about a week.  He is busy eating so he can build his chrysalis.   We will be watching him grow each day.  When he is finished eating and building his chrysalis, we will take him to the library where he will turn into a beautiful butterfly.

We had fun naming him and are enjoying learning all about Painted Lady Butterflies!

We survived the week after Spring Break!  Wow, we were all tired on Monday.  Not to worry, we were all back to our energetic selves by the end of the week!

In Reading Group we started our nonfiction unit on FROGS!  We are learning so much and having so much fun!  Our reports are going to be awesome!

Here are some pictures from a few of our Reading Centers this week. These are 1st and 2nd grade centers.

1st Graders read Froggy's First Sleepover and completed Thinking Maps about the characters.

2nd Graders did the Bunny Hop Syllable Sort
Listening:

1st Graders had a Following Written Directions activity.  They created a cloud and kite.  (We read The Kite the week before!)
2nd Graders did a Cause and Effect sort.

Jack Hartman Concert!!
The kids (and teachers) had so much fun!  Here are a few pictures and a few videos.  (If the videos do not play, leave a comment and I will try to fix it.  They were being temperamental when I was loading them!)

Have a great weekend.
