Donor's Choose

Our class had a project funded through Donor's Choose!  (Starbuck's was our donor.  A $279 donation....they must know I love coffee and that I am a gold member.)  The supplies were delivered last Thursday.  We will be working on our Thank You's this week.

10th Day of School

Wow, we have been in first grade for TEN whole days.  We have been very, very busy.  Day 10 was especially busy for us.  Two friends had birthdays, we had a practice fire drill during reading group, we experienced our first trip to the treasure box, we used our Science Books for the first time and there was a special package delivered to us.  It was SO heavy, Mr. Bronson and Ms. Stratton had to carry it all the way from the office to our carpet for Miss Gilbert.

The package said  "To: Ms. Gilbert's Monkeys" and was covered in 0's and Z's.  After making lots of predictions about what was in it and who sent it, we FINALLY opened it.

It was from ZERO THE HERO!  Zero the Hero is a superhero who LOVES the number 10.  He sent us a letter, a balloon, a "zero treat", a cape and his special helper.

Zero the Hero doesn't just bring us treats, he helps us learn about the number 10.  We found lots of way to make the number 10 at Morning Math Meeting.

The next time Zero the Hero visits  (his letter said he would visit again) someone gets to wear the cape and be the helper at Morning Math Meeting.  When do you think he will visit again?  Leave a sticky on the wall with your prediction.

First Week Fun

All of my little monkeys seemed to have a great first week of school.  Were they as tired as I was?
We spent the week learning our routines and procedures, reading lots of jungle animal and back to school books, working on the story of 4, practicing fire drills and even made a science sticker scene.  It looks like we might get to practice our severe weather drill on Monday thanks to Isaac.  Beware, the first grade hallway floods!
The students are doing a great job bringing their folders and backpacks to school everyday.  The binders will start coming home after Labor Day.  Since our special area schedule changes weekly and we have playtime every day, it is important that students wear sneakers to school daily.  Helping your child learn how to tie their shoes will save us a LOT of time throughout the day;-).
Siloh visited our classroom on Saturday.  He saw all of the fun things we did and really wants to be a first grader!  Here is a picture of him at the Reading Area.

After a couple of hours he need a nap!

First Day FUN!!!

What a fantastic first day!  I had so much fun and hope the students did too!  I wonder if they are as tired as I am!

After reading the story First Day Jitters we had Jitter Juice to help our first day jitters go away!  Everyone liked it!  We even graphed and tallied our results! First graders, tell you parents about the surprise at the end of the story!

Thank you parents for allowing me to spend the next 180 school days teaching your children.  I could not do my job without you!  And thank you, thank you, thank you for all of the supplies you sent in.  In my 9 years of teaching I have never had so many supplies sent in on the first day of school!

I can't wait to see you all tomorrow for Day 2!  It is going to be as wonderful as the first!

Welcome to First Grade

Welcome to First Grade...and our blog if you are a new follower!  It was great meeting so many of you at Meet the Teacher.  I was able to meet 16 fabulous families today.  That was a record for my class!  I can tell we are going to have a fantastic year!
Are you excited about Monday or are you nervous?  A little of both?  That's okay!  There is no need to worry, I promise!  You are going to make new friends, see old ones, and do so many fun first grade activities that you won't even realize it is time to go home when the bell rings!

Jack Hartman

Jack Hartman came for our concert today.  We LOVE Jack Hartman and his songs.  We listen to and sing a lot of his songs throughout the school year.  His songs are mostly about reading and math, but some are just fun!
The concert was a HIT.  (After some of us got over the fact that Jack Hartman does not look like Justin Bieber.  Yes, that was a conversation we had before we headed to the cafeteria!)
Here are some videos.  They are not the best quality but you will get to see how much fun we had.  I should have taken more video.....but I was having too much fun singing and dancing along with the kids!

Field Trip Pictures....finally!!!!

Here are a few pictures from our field trip to see The Lorax.  I think it is safe to say the the field trip was a HUGE success!

The big "kid" in the back is Jordan.  He is my little brother who spent a day of his Spring Break helping out in our classroom!  He gets the BEST LITTLE BROTHER IN THE WORLD award!

We did not take our eyes off of the screen once the movie started.  Well, except to check out how much popcorn we had left!
